Job Description

GDIT is seeking a Systems Engineer with Linux expertise to provide technical support and exceptional customer service for the Office of the Director (OD) within the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Our team of six Engineers provides Infrastructure/Datacenter Operations to approximately 2,700 users at OD and works alongside other GDIT staff who provide Desktop Support, Cyber Security Operations, Web Development, Customer Relations and Program Management support.

This role is supporting a critical mission for the public health, working at the prestigious National Institutes of Health main campus in Bethesda MD.  The NIH Director provides overall leadership to NIH activities in both scientific and administrative matters. Your technological expertise and systems operations/engineering experience will play a vital role in the OD helping the NIH meet its mission objectives.  After serving OD, there are many opportunities to move into other more experienced roles across the GDIT huge portfolio of projects, providing you career growth while part of a dynamic and vital company.

Job Responsibilities and Functions:

  • Provide technical support, conduct operational analysis, recommend efficiencies to improve services and support technical project initiatives as required.
  • Install, monitor and tune Linux Server operating system software and virtual machine sub-system software.
  • Design and deploy server hardware and periodically review configurations for optimal performance.
  • Consult with clients and team members to provide hardware and software recommendations
  • Develop processing standards, procedures, and automation for use by IT staff in a constantly growing and evolving environment.
  • Respond to alerts by enterprise monitoring across all systems managed by the team and provide daily operational status
  • Assist in updating disaster recovery plans and testing continuity of operations
  • Work within help desk ticketing system to document all work performed and communication with clients
  • Deliver weekly reports to supervisor; project-based communications as required

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • BS or equivalent and five years experience or a MS and three years experience
  • Minimum of five years experience supporting RedHat Server platforms
  • Experience supporting  Linux, Apache, MySQL, Python/PHP Stack in a hosting environment 
  • Strong skills in automation and scripting (Python or bash)
  • Experience with RedHat Ansible and/or comparable tools, such as Puppet or Chef
  • Experience with RedHat Satellite
  • ITIL Foundations Certificate (must have or be able to acquire within six months of hire)

Desired Qualifications and Experience:

  • Experience with VMWare or RHEL implementations
  • Experience supporting Cisco UCS infrastructure
  • Experience supporting COTS software, such as Drupal and WordPress
  • Knowledge or experience with Storage Area Networks 
  • Prior ticketing experience, such ServiceNow or Remedy
  • Certifications: RHCSA, RHCE, Network+, and/or Security+
  • Experience working at NIH
  • Experience with Windows Servers
  • Ability to write clear, concise documentation

Additional Details:

  • Position is full time and onsite in Bethesda, MD
  • Work schedule is Monday - Friday
  • Schedule will be between core hours of 7:00 am – 6:00 pm to ensure customer support
  • On call after hours support will be assigned based on a rotation
